Inquests failing to meet scheduling targets

LEGAL changes have led to a “significant rise in case volume” at Gwent Coroners’ Service, resulting in nearly three-quarters of new inquest hearings failing to meet scheduling targets.

Newport City Council, which oversees the service, revealed that only 27.3% of new cases since April have been scheduled for inquest within six months of being opened.

In contrast, over the past three years, more than 90% of new cases were heard within this six-month timeframe.
