Harbour safety calls after death of police officer, 28

Pc Rehaan Akhtar, of South Wales Police, is one of two people to have died at Bristol harbour in recent weeks.

The body of Pc Akhtar, 28, was recovered on November 24 and another man, a 50-year-old known only as Matthew, was found dead at the same spot on December 15. Locals say enough is enough with stats showing more than a dozen people have drowned in this stretch of water over the last 11 years.

A change.org petition created by an Emma Miller, and signed by 116 people, calls for safety measures to "prevent further loss of life".

She is campaigning for railings and clear signage to be installed, as well as CCTV cameras to provide footage in emergencies.

The petition reads: "Over the past decade, Bristol's vibrant harbour has witnessed multiple drownings, leaving families devastated and communities heartbroken.

"Despite these tragic incidents, no substantial safety measures have been implemented to prevent further loss of life. As a concerned member of the Bristol community, I urge our local government to take immediate action to e Bristol harbour safer for everyone."

Avon Fire and Rescue Service recorded 13 accidental drownings in the area between 2014 and 2022, reports SWNS.

Pc Akhtar, from Llanelli, was last seen in the early hours of November 23 when he had been drinking with friends in Bristol.
