Credit crunch lunch
Western Mail
|April 18, 2026
As rising costs affect the hospitality industry, restaurants are having to get creative to lure diners in.
-
One celebrated Welsh venue has introduced a reduced price lunch menu using affordable quality produce, as Huw S Thomas reportsHERE are no fewer than 47 Welsh restaurants in the 2026 Michelin Guide, ranging from the luxurious two-star Ynyshir in Machynlleth down to the more modest Talbot in Tregaron.
But I don't think any can hope to match the extraordinary value £20 three-course lunch served up from Wednesday to Saturday at the Carmarthenshire gem that is Y Polyn.
The family-run restaurant has neither stars nor Bib Gourmand status - just a modest Michelin recommended status and inclusion in the Good Food Guide - but continues, without failure, to offer top-quality produce, prepared without extravagance or pretention at a cost which puts many a Welsh starred restaurant to complete shame.
Simple ingredients have been magically conjured to give dishes an intensity of taste enough to turn heads and stop any conversation in its tracks.
