Best buds

AS the days lengthen in May and June, gardens across Wales come alive with a vibrant array of blooms, offering a stunning display of late spring beauty. From the rich scent of magnolias to the delicate presence of wildflowers, these gardens captivate visitors.

NORTH WALES

Bodnant Garden, Conwy

Bodnant Garden flourishes in May and June. Magnolias continue to bloom in early May, with the impressive Magnolia grandiflora standing tall, its creamy flowers adding elegance. The Rhododendron Walk is a spectacle of vivid blossoms, while the terraced garden brims with climbing roses. Don’t miss The Glades, where the last of the spring flowers create an enchanting scene.

Chirk Castle & Garden, Wrexham

May is a spectacular time to visit Chirk Castle, where rhododendrons, tulips, and the first roses of the season fill the gardens with striking hues. The Pleasure Ground Wood is carpeted in bluebells and foxgloves, forming a picturesque woodland setting. A highlight of late spring is the rare Handkerchief Tree (Davidia involucrata), its delicate white flowers fluttering like silk in the breeze. Over 200 species of rhododendrons, alongside azaleas, camellias, and magnolias, create a breathtaking display.

Erddig Hall & Garden, Wrexham
