Award-winning curries with beautiful sunsets

Nothing beats a curry, especially after strolling in the fresh air listening to the sounds of the sea - now 1988 Indian Restaurant has won best in south Wales. Kathryn Williams reports
-
YOU have to hand it to 1988 Indian Restaurant down in Sully. The seaside curry house has just been named “best restaurant in south Wales” at the so-called Curry Oscars, the Asian Restaurant & Takeaway Awards, and that’s after claiming the title “Best Asian Restaurant in Wales” for 2024, a little under a year after they opened.
With such titles under their belts, plus my utter weakness in resisting a brilliant curry, I decided earlier in the summer to try out 1988 - and discovered it’s not just the food that appeals to diners at the coastal restaurant.
I stumbled upon 1988 Indian Restaurant while taking a walk down at Sully Bay, which sits between Penarth and Barry Island and the venue is unmissable and intriguing - on the Sully cove where it sits, you can’t help but notice the venue, especially with its clear dining pods and huge windows facing out to Sully Island and beyond.
But its location is a bonus, what we really want is the food to live up to the view, so I returned with a few friends to try out the menu.
