Store can sell booze around the clock
Western Daily Press
|October 21, 2025
A SOMERSET Budgens store can serve alcohol to its customers 24 hours a day, despite nearby residents fearing it will bring noise, crime and “rowdy behaviour” to the area.
-
The Wells branch of Budgens is within the Esso petrol station on the B3139 Bath Road, in a residential neighbourhood on the eastern edge of the city.
Motor Fuel Ltd applied to vary its existing licence for the store, which also includes a Post Office counter, allowing it to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises 24 hours a day.
Somerset Council has agreed to change the licence, despite residents claiming it is already frequented by “alcoholics”.
Under its existing licence, Budgens can only supply alcohol for consumption off the premises between 7am and 10pm daily.
