WE seem to be heading into ‘hair that broke the camel's back’ territory when it comes to the daily news.

For the most part it’s all pretty terrible, there never seems to be any letup, which is perhaps why the popular BBC Today programme - normally a corner of the media that is so obsessed with news it only begrudgingly makes time for things like weather and sport - took to broadcasting the natural sounds of spring this week.

Perhaps some hardened news-editor, on the brink of a nervous breakdown, walked into Broadcasting House one day and groaned... “No! Not wall-to-wall Mandelson again! And we've ‘ad it up to here with Andy. Everyone needs a break from Trump. And surely for God’s sake we've had enough of warzones. Why not just play the sound of a song-thrush calling for a mate in springtime garden?”

Good idea.
