From 'Happy Cactus' to 'Unicorn Horns... kids rename fruit and veg
Western Daily Press
|September 26, 2025
THE weird and wonderful ways that children describe fruit and vegetables is helping others to try them.
-
Pupils at a South West school are among those to have been appointed as Tesco “mini merchandisers”.
Broccoli is now “Palm Tree’s Little Sister”, pineapples have become “Spiky Wonder Fruit”, and baby corn is rebranded as “Unicorn Horns”, thanks to imaginative pupils at Twerton Nursery and Infant School, in Bath, Somerset.
Their playful new names are now appearing in their local branch, the Tesco Superstore at Keynsham.
The fun rebranding marks the return of Tesco's Fruit & Veg for Schools programme. It says the playful language taps into peer influence with 82% of children saying they're more likely to try a fruit or veg if their friends recommend it. For many parents and teachers, it’s proving more effective than traditional persuasion.
