Engineer killed in crash was twice alcohol limit

A YOUNG man with a passion for vintage engines missed his chance of a lift into town and decided to drive despite having had too much to drink, an inquest has heard.

The day before he died, on December 14 last year, Samuel ‘Sammy’ Vass, 22, an Air Engineering Technician serving at RNAS Culdrose in Helston, had worked late into the night to finish maintenance tasks on an aircraft.

Mr Vass, colleagues and friends had a few drinks on the air station that evening before deciding to go for more drinks at a pub in Helston.

The hearing on October 6 was told taxis and designated drivers had been arranged but Mr Vass missed the last trip into town.

As a result he got into his Audi hatchback and, shortly after midnight, set out to drive to town along the A3083.
