Hammersmith Bridge open again after £2.9m works

CYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS ABLE TO USE THAMES CROSSING ONCE MORE

PEDESTRIANS and cyclists can now return to Hammersmith Bridge follow the re-opening of the structure's main carriageway after a £2.9 million project.

The works were delivered to the Grade II-listed Victorian bridge to improve the experience of pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooter users.

Hammersmith Bridge was closed to motor vehicles in April 2019 due to structural issues, particularly cracks in the pedestals.

A full repair, to open it to cars, is expected to take many more years, much to the dismay of locals.

There has been a significant increase in traffic on Putney Bridge as a result of Hammersmith Bridge closure. TfL data also confirms bus journey and waiting times have worsened.

However, the bridge now has dedicated lanes for cyclists, one for those travelling north and another for those venturing south, as well as a two-way pedestrian path accessible for wheelchairs. This third lane comes alongside the outer footways, which will remain open to pedestrians only.
