Harris should celebrate, but not relax

Toronto Star

September 12, 2024

Not bad for 90 minutes work. By Wednesday morning, the once-and-lord-help-us-neveragain president was dialing in to “Fox & Friends,” unconvincingly trying to shrug off the disaster of the night before and dissing all over Swift. “She’ll probably pay a price for it in the marketplace.”

Harris should celebrate, but not relax

In a bravura performance, Kamala Harris:

■ Eviscerated Donald Trump, inducing even more of the crazy than anyone had seen coming.

■ Raised upwards of $9 million in donations for her campaign war chest.

■ Nailed the endorsement of Taylor Swift.

It’s unlikely that the mega popstar’s 283 million Instagram followers (4.5 million likes on the post as of this writing) — mostly teenagers — will actually have much impact on the U.S. election. But the rest of Trump’s stunning debate debacle surely should carry consequences.

Or will it? Trump exposed every facet of his psycho nature — the easily triggered rage, the perfidious mendacity (a firehose of falsehoods), the adoration of tyrants (Hungarian strongman Viktor Orban as an ardent admirer? Seriously?), towering ego and the endless mewling grievances. None of that is unknown territory. Trump has been banging on about it since the last election, which he still renounces as stolen, denialism of facts that have been firmly settled in the courts.

And for far longer than these past four years out of office in the revelation of his miscreant character.

Yet more than 72 million Americans voted for him in 2020 anyway. How many of them will peel away now? Or, conversely, how many voters will return to the Democrat fold, provided a more palatable choice than self-immolating Joe Biden? Democrat strategists may be turning hallelujah cartwheels today but Trump has long shown a knack for surmounting doomsday predictions, impeachments, criminal charges and every-which-way character indictments.
