A dog-friendly week in the Cotswolds is dreamy and stress-free for Faye Preston

The Cotswolds often sells itself as an upmarket location for romantic mini-breaks, with cosy country pubs, tearooms, art galleries and farmers' markets.

But as someone who likes to holiday with their canine companion, I wondered if the welcome would be warm for those with wagging tails. Hotels are a no-no for a hound like Riley, with his slightly unpredictable quirks. Rescued from the streets, trusting people is hard, social cues get muddled and he has nervous energy. But a self-catering stay in the centre of Stow-on-the-Wold, one of the most famous honey-hued villages, proved the perfect pet-friendly base.

Monday: We arrive at Flat 1, Martins House, an elegantly decorated apartment we had booked through StayCotswold. Tucked down a quaint alleyway, a few steps from town.

With exposed stone walls, a wood burner, and decorated in soft blues and pinks, it was everything we'd hoped for in a country retreat.

Sleeping four, with pets welcome, it was ideal for days exploring and nights snuggled up on the sofa.

Both bedrooms have en-suites with rainfall showers. Outside was a small courtyard with tables and chairs, which was a safe, enclosed space for Riley to sniff about in.

Tuesday: We head into Stow for breakfast at Coach House Coffee for croissants and hot chocolate. Riley snaffles his treat from the counter - a lovely touch that tells us our dog is no bother at all.
