SIT Submits Sealed Report to SC

The Special Investigation Team appointed by the Supreme Court to probe allegations of illegal animal acquisition at Vantara, a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, has submitted its findings in a sealed cover.

The report, which includes annexures and supplementary material saved on a pen drive, was officially recorded by a bench comprising Justices Pankaj Mithal and Prasanna B. Varale, who noted, "It is accepted and directed to be taken on record."

BACKGROUND The inquiry was initiated following concerns raised by CR Jaya Sukin, who alleged that Vantara had unlawfully obtained animals such as elephants, endangered birds, and other protected species under the pretext of offering rescue and rehabilitation services. The petitioner further claimed that animals were trafficked into the facility in violation of wildlife protection statutes, international transport laws, and animal welfare guidelines.
