Party switching reshapes Dispur battle

In the run-up to the Assam Assembly elections 2026, the Dispur constituency has emerged as the centre of a sharp political battle marked by irony, shifting loyalties and strong accusations. What is unfolding is not just a contest between two candidates, but a larger narrative of trust versus opportunism.

At the centre are two prominent leaders—Pradyut Bordoloi and Mira Borthakur Goswami—both of whom have switched parties at different points. Bordoloi, a two-term Congress Lok Sabha MP from Nagaon, recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is now its candidate from Dispur.

His rival, Mira Borthakur, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president, had earlier left the BJP and is now contesting on a Congress ticket. This has turned the election into what many call a “New BJP vs New Congress” battle.
