Liam Gallagher's Tweet Shows Stars Can Be Cancel-Proof

The tweet-storm has shown the world that fans of the singer from English rock band Oasis see the world through a peculiar set of lenses

On July 1, just days before English rock band Oasis would kick off its comeback tour, its lead singer Liam Gallagher made a post on X that included a slur for Asians: "chingchong".

The post was met with much-deserved anger, especially from Asian accounts. What was galling for Asians was that the Oasis Live '25 Tour would head to Seoul and Tokyo in October, meaning that he was mocking the people who would be giving him the cash to buy more sports cars.

In previous years, the band played in Hong Kong and Singapore — one wonders what interesting words went through Gallagher's mind as he looked out at the audience — but Oasis are not scheduled to play in either place on their current tour.

In 2025, people who look like me should not be shocked when Americans or Europeans reveal what they think about non-whites. That is just the way it is today on the internet, especially on platforms that claim to defend free speech.

What was most interesting about the tweet, the deletion of it and the apology from the singer is the way fans defended him.
