Helping to steady Parkinson's symptoms
The Straits Times

Deep brain stimulation can reduce symptoms of Parkinson's disease and improve patients' quality of life, says neurosurgeon Nicolas Kon
Parkinson's disease is a progressive brain disorder caused by the breakdown of nerve cells in the part of the brain that controls movement. In Singapore, three out of every 1,000 individuals aged 50 years and above have this disease, according to the Parkinson Society Singapore.
Parkinson's disease causes a gradual deterioration of motor function, leading to tremors, rigidity, slowed movement and imbalance. Even with medication, the condition will worsen over time, says Dr Nicolas Kon, a neurosurgeon at Neuro Asia Care, a specialist neurosurgery clinic at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre.
To slow down the progression of symptoms, an advanced surgical treatment like deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been proven to help.
