HONG KONG'S NEW SOCIAL ACTIVISTS Ironically, it is the younger generation, not the elderly, who are leading efforts to preserve Hong Kong's heritage.

Local campaigns championing causes — such as the conservation of the city's pioneer public housing estates, or the promotion of the wider use of Cantonese — are increasingly led by young Hong Kongers in their 20s and 30s.

These social activists — many of them having migrated elsewhere since 2020 — admit they do so in part to alleviate their sense of loss and a perceived disconnect between the city they once knew and the one in flux today.

Still, they sometimes face challenges in getting their concerns to be taken seriously by the authorities.
