Government steps up for women's safety and dignity with sanitation and hygiene initiatives

Recognizing the fundamental role of sanitation in ensuring women's dignity and safety, the Government of India has implemented several transformative measures addressing gender-specific challenges, the Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Savitri Thakur, said during a Rajya Sabha session today.

The high recurring cost of sanitary napkins has also been a barrier to menstrual health, especially for economically disadvantaged women. In addition, women bear the primary responsibility for ensuring access to safe water and sanitation at the household level. Traditional patriarchal norms often relegate toilet cleaning to women, further increasing their care burden and leaving little time for economic productivity.
