National Commission for Women intervenes in Kolkata law college rape case as protests escalate
The Statesman Kolkata
|June 30, 2025
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged gang rape of a first-year student at a government-run law college in Kasba, south Kolkata, that has fuelled public outrage and intensified political tensions across West Bengal.
On Sunday morning, an NCW delegation led by member Dr Archana Majumdar—a practising physician—visited the campus where the incident allegedly occurred. During the visit, a heated exchange reportedly broke out between Dr Majumdar and the police over the issue of photographing the crime scene. She was made to wait for an extended period before being allowed entry, sources said.
Although the team had initially planned to visit the survivor's home on Saturday, the visit was deferred, as police had taken the survivor to the college to recreate the sequence of events. Nevertheless, the Commission was later able to record her statement.
