Beneath the Lunar South Pole: Chandrayaan-3's transformative discoveries

India's Chandrayaan-3 mission has etched a stream of significant scientific discoveries since its historic lunar south pole landing on 23 August 2023.

- BIDISHA GHOSH

The mission's remarkable findings in less than a year have changed our knowledge of the Moon's volatile chemistry, geology, and potential for supporting further exploration.

India is now at the forefront of planetary research thanks to Chandrayaan-3, which has recorded unexplained seismic activity and detected sulfur at the lunar south pole for the first time.

One of the most remarkable findings was the identification of sulfur at the south pole of the Moon, which was verified by the sophisticated spectrometers on the Pragyan Rover.

Sulfur had only been suspected prior to this mission; Chandrayaan-3 offered the first concrete proof.

The rover recorded elements such as aluminum, calcium, iron, chromium, titanium, manganese, silicon, and oxygen in addition to sulfur.

There is more to these chemical fingerprints than just a scientific interest.

They hint at water ice reservoirs, which are a vital resource for any prolonged human presence, and provide important insights into lunar surface processes.

In particular, sulfur is important because it may be utilized to produce construction materials and fuel, which would support long-term goals of establishing lunar bases.

Equally groundbreaking was the detection of natural moonquakes in the region.
