Unisa commemorates Es kia Mphahlele: Celebrating African writer as a prophet

UNISA hosted a vibrant gathering of scholars, writers and students in Polokwane on November 26 for the sixteenth Es kia Mphahlele Annual Memorial Lecture.
The event, held under the theme “The African Writer as a Prophet and Social Critic in Contemporary Times’, paid tribute to one of South Africas most influential literary figures while reaffirming Unisas commitment to advancing African scholarship and strengthening its social impact.
Es kia Mphahlele, often remembered as a pioneer of African humanism, left an extraordinary mark on global literature and education.
Born in Limpopo in 1919, he rose from the injustices of apartheid South Africa to become one of the most respected African writers of the twentieth century.
His groundbreaking autobiography Down Second Avenue became a classic for its honest portrayal of township life, its critique of racial oppression and its celebration of human endurance.
Mphahlele spent many years in exile, teaching in Nigeria, Kenya, France and the United States, where he continued to champion African intellectual traditions.
