NEVER fully satisfied, Port Vale manager Darren Moore's report on his players at that time was definitely 'could do better'.

Next up was the visit of Fleetwood Town, who had been relegated the previous season along with Vale.

Ahead of the game Moore told the club: “We still feel as a group of people, men, team, staff, that there is a long way to go and there is so much to improve in our game.

“So many areas we are so consistently working on and need to get better at.”

Vale were there to be shot at as they had climbed to the League Two summit without being wholly convincing.

The expectations had been high from day one.

“We can’t stop the media, what's been said about the team, we can’t stop that,” Moore continued.

“What is keeping us going is knowing there are more areas of our game we need to be better at. We've identified so many areas, where consistently, as a group and individuals, we need to be better.

“Some parts are really strong. And some we need to improve. It's essential. We know we are nowhere near the finished article.”

Meanwhile, Leicester loanee Brandon Cover said it was, “a real privilege to represent the colours of Port Vale, represent the fans and the community.”

He had certainly been briefed well on what to say.
