AN unoccupied street used as a fly-tipping dumping ground is to be closed to make way for a new housing estate.

Shelton's Pyenest Street has been a magnet for illegal waste and anti-social behaviour for years.

Now concrete barriers are to be installed in a last-ditch bid to 'improve public safety and create a cleaner environment. The closure will come into force on Thursday, May 1 and the bollards will remain in place until May 1, 2027.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has confirmed that access for businesses will be maintained and alternative routes will be signposted. It comes as the next step in the regeneration of the brownfield site, which is earmarked for a huge housing development.
