GEORGE Byers reckons Port Vale shouldn't be content in League One and should have the ambition to get to the next level.

- Clive Youlton

The 29-year-old Londonder, born to Scottish parents, wants to help drive standards at the club and help them reach the Championship.

The midfielder hardly featured in last season’s promotion campaign in League Two, starting just 14 times out of 46 games, and making just nine substitute appearances.

He managed to join in the promotion party when returning for the final few matches, but he and the supporters will be expecting much more this season.

Byers has played in the Championship but knows that counts for nothing if he isn’t fit.

Now he’s looking forward to the new season, which starts at Rotherham United tomorrow.

“Preseason is long and tough and I just want to get the season started now, I can’t wait for it,” Byers said.

“I feel fit and fresh and I feel really good and excited. I had a bit of a stop-start season last year so at the end of it I just wanted to carry on a little bit.
