Champions Green defeated by Castle in opening clash

Dave Bailey and Keilan Bond's Green started well, but couldn't find a way past Castle keeper Sam Roberts.

A defensive mix-up saw Newcastle awarded a penalty shortly before the interval and Bayley Bateman made no mistake.

Ball Haye Green came out ina determined mood for the second half - but fell 2-0 down when Bateman found the net once again.

Green pushed on and did get on back in the game through a Harrison Birch strike on 83 minutes to reduce the arrears.

A last-minute goalmouth scramble saw goalkeeping hero Roberts make an excellent save, followed soon after by goal-bound efforts from the hosts hitting the post and crossbar.

Newcastle finally held out for the three points, but had to see the game out with nine men after two dismissals for second yellow cards.

Brereton Social made a winning start with a 3-1 home victory over Leek Town.

Brereton, last year’s runners-up, fell behind in the opening minute through Will Stanyer’s strike.

Matty Ainger’s men drew level before halftime with the hosts pulling away in the second half.

Kieron Cliff, Will Burns and Conor Phillips were on target for the home side.

AFC Crewe kicked off with a 2-1 home win against AFC Norton.

Visitors AFC Norton opened their account shortly after the half-hour when Mitch Underwood fired home.
