£16m road repair cash 'very, very welcome'

COUNCIL chiefs will be able to repair more roads thanks to a Government windfall of almost £16m.
The Local Transport Grant, announced at the end of March, was welcomed by Staffordshire County Council cabinet members at their latest meeting.
The grant came after the cabinet approved a £60m investment in Staffordshire's highways over the next three years at last month's meeting.
But Councillor Mark Deaville, cabinet member for strategic highways, said it would take a doubling of the current level of Government funding over a 20-year period to address the current national maintenance backlog.
