With world order on a churn and USA playing spoilsport, India needs to remodel its equations with various other important players mainly in Asia and beyond, writes Chinmay Basu.

- Chinmay Basu

In the aftermath of Russia-Ukraine conflict most countries joined US sponsored sanction against Russia. Iran along with China and North Korea opposed. India did not toe the line and abstained from censuring Russia. In defiance of American diktat, India continued importing Russian oil.

In international politics no equation is permanent. Indians witnessed many a friendly overture from Donald Trump towards India and Indian Prime Minister during his first stint in the White House and run up to the 2024 election. But something changed from the beginning of his second term. First shock came during the oath ceremony. World leaders including Xi Jinping of China were invited, but not Indian Prime Minister. Soon after next shock came when Indian nationals were deported back in hand-cuff and chains. That was not enough. President Trump while addressing its adverse trade balance, declared high tariff barriers to all but chose to accuse India in particular being the worst of the lot. That kind of public postures one after the other were to drive a message home.
