UERM Medical Center, an institution for medical education and healthcare delivery, achieved a breakthrough by successfully completing the Philippines' first and the world's second endoscopic removal of a 5-centimeter malignant right tumor at the base of the spine bone. This accomplishment has only been done by two medical centers worldwide, one of which is UERM Medical Center. The first endoscopic spine surgery was done in South Korea.
The procedure, led by Neurosurgeon, Dr. Elmer Jose A. Meceda, removed the metastasized mass of 68-year-old Ligaya Aglipay, a former Barangay Nutrition Scholar from Isabela. Just a day after the five-hour operation, Nanay Ligaya was able to move painlessly. She now only experiences occasional mild sharp pain in the back of her right leg.
