Tropical Depression Nando continued to move northwestward yesterday and is forecast to intensify into a typhoon this weekend, with the possibility of reaching super typhoon status as it nears Northern Luzon.

- By CHRISTINE BOTON

As of 3 p.m., the weather system was located 1,260 kilometers east of Central Luzon, carrying maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 70 kph while moving northwest at 15 kph.

Forecast models show that Nando will strengthen into a tropical storm within the next 24 hours and may reach typhoon category by Saturday.

Current projections indicate that the system could either pass close to or cross extreme Northern Luzon by late Sunday or Monday.
