Leila pushes for PCG modernization

In light of increasing tensions in the West Philippine Sea and the strategic importance of the country's maritime domain, House deputy minority leader Leila de Lima is seeking to create a modernized and strengthened Philippine Coast Guard.

“The PCG plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of life and property at sea and protecting the marine environment within the maritime jurisdiction of the country. Over the past decade, however, emerging maritime threats, increasing international obligations and rapid developments in the maritime domain have outpaced the capabilities of the PCG, necessitating a comprehensive update to its legal charter,” De Lima said in House Bill 5131.

In filing HB 5131, De Lima aims to repeal Republic Act 9993, or the Philippine Coast Guard Law of 2009, and replace it with a comprehensive revised PCG law.
