It has been 25 years since Dean Labayen has been allowed to enter the Philippines.
The Filipino-Canadian basketball player has tried on more than one occasion to return to his family’s land, only to be arrested, jailed and deported to other countries. But he fights on.The 6'1” guard first gained attention playing with the Negros Slashers in the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association, arguably the league’s most popular team. He saw action with 1998 MBA Most Valuable Player John Ferriols, Dorian Pefia and other known pros.
“When I played, I had only finished two years of study,” Labayen told The STAR and Basketball Universe PHL from Canada. “After the season, I flew back here to take my third and fourth year and grab my degree.”
