DOJ chief: Rendition of Teves broached to Timor-Leste

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla has discussed with TimorLeste President José Ramos-Horta the possibility of rendition for former Negros Oriental representative Arnolfo Teves Jr., who has been charged with murder and declared as a terrorist in the Philippines.

The discussion was made during a one-hour meeting between Remulla and Ramos-Horta last Saturday, when they also discussed other topics such as the criminal justice system, the judiciary and good governance, among others.

“I told him we will be filing necessary information or necessary letters to his office to inform them formally of the charges pending against Mr. Teves and that their duties of rendition are there,” Remulla said at a press briefing.

Under the United Nations’ agreement on terrorism, “there is a duty for member-states to render unto the prosecuting country the body of a terrorist so that he may be held for trial,” he added.
