Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta on Wednesday described the Emergency imposed on June 25, 1975, as the “darkest chapter in the history of Indian democracy,” calling it a direct assault on the Constitution and citizens’ fundamental rights.

Pura, observed as Constitution Murder Day under the leadership of Jammu Border District President Rinku Choudhary, Gupta said the 1975 Emergency under the Congress regime crushed democracy to retain power. He recalled the mass arrests of political leaders, journalists, and citizens, and the suppression of press freedom and civil liberties during that time
