Year after inauguration, ceiling of govt school building crashes

IT was a close shave for students of the panchayat union primary school at Singalanthapuram here on Monday as a portion of the ceiling plaster in one of the school's two classrooms gave away, falling on to the desks and leaving debris scattered across the floor.

As the incident occurred within minutes of the school opening for its breakfast programme, none of the 34 students had entered class, averting any tragedy.

With the incident taking place in a classroom that came into use only in April 2024 sparking outrage, the district collector suspended two panchayat officials and moved to blacklist the contractor who built the classrooms, sources said.
