Stroke, heart ailments can affect oral hygiene

ON World Stroke Day, let's join hands to bring awareness on the maintenance of oral hygiene as the mouth is the gateway for the foreign pathogens to enter and cause various health issues.

Negligence is predominantly seen amongst the common people when it comes to managing oral cavity. The part of the body that gets the least attention and maintenance is the mouth. It is our duty to maintain it and prevent further health issues.

The preventive measure for any health issue should originate from nutrition followed by management, rehabilitation, and maintenance. Nutrition requires intake of food which implies chewing and biting. The requirement includes 32 teeth followed by absorption in the stomach. A recent study has shown that any food being ingested needs to be chewed 32 times to initiate proper digestion.

The general symptoms found in the oral cavity involve accumulation of food debris, and tartar which solidifies and becomes hard over a period of time that cannot be removed by brushing. Neglecting at this stage might lead to the infection spreading to the underlying soft tissue and bone. On other hand, cavities on tooth structure acts as the major source of bacteria colonisation. These bacteria initially present on the tooth structure and penetrate into a deeper layer entering the bloodstream.
