SWALLOWING difficulties, medically referred to as dysphagia, are common among individuals recovering from a stroke or receiving radiation therapy for head and neck cancers. It can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, and serious complications like aspiration pneumonia.

How to manage swallowing woes

However, with the right interventions, it can be managed. Alternative feeding methods are recommended to maintain nutritional intake. Two commonly used options include: Nasogastric (NG) Tube: This temporary feeding solution involves inserting a tube through the nose into the stomach. It provides a short-term way to deliver nutrition directly to the stomach while the patient recovers or undergoes therapy.

Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) Tube: A more long-term option, the PEG tube is inserted into the stomach through the abdominal wall. It is used when swallowing difficulties are expected to persist for a longer period. Both methods ensure that patients receive adequate nutrition and hydration, reducing the risk of aspiration (food or liquid entering the airway). The ultimate goal is to safely transition patients back to oral feeding.
