Officials plan to demolish 1,535 houses on the foothills of Deepamalai due to landslide threat and based on HC order
A tense standoff ensued on Wednesday between police and over 200 residents under the Tiruvannamalai corporation limits, who staged a road blockade on key routes, including Vellore Road, Mada Road, and Chengam Road, disrupting traffic for over three hours.
Residents, many of whom claim to have lived at the base of Deepamalai for four to five generations, expressed their distress over the eviction drive by the district administration and revenue department, which plans to demolish 1,535 houses allegedly constructed illegally at the base of the 2,668-foot-high Deepamalai hill, located behind the iconic Annamalaiyar Temple.
