The prospect of looming American tariffs and growing Iran-US tensions affecting the price of aromatic, premium rice variety of Basmati this year is giving rise to apprehensions that farmers of Punjab might prefer shifting to non-Basmati paddy.

- HARPREET BAJWA @Chandigarh

Such a scenario would decrease the acreage under Basmati cultivation in Punjab, which accounts for 40% of the variety's national production.

Basmati has a Geographical Indication (GI) tag as a native crop of Punjab. Acreage under Basmati has already decreased from 7.63 lakh hectares in 2015-16 to 6.39 hectares in 2024-25.
