SIX months after its launch, the Centre's ambitious plan to set up at least one Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) in every district is gaining momentum, with groundwork underway and proposals coming in from across the country.

- PARVEZ SULTAN @New Delhi

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has approved 20 IDTRs, with another 20 in the pipeline.

"On a daily basis, the ministry is receiving proposals. The matter is being taken up on priority," said officials familiar with the development. "There was some confusion as the matter had landed in the Supreme Court, and it was believed that a stay had been imposed. But work is progressing. The government is giving a subsidy of ₹2.5 crore, though the cost is around ₹3-3.5 crore."
