AMID a shortage of rare earth magnets blamed on China's export restrictions, the Centre on Wednesday approved a ₹7,280-crore scheme to boost domestic manufacturing of these critical materials.
Minister for Information & Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters that the 'Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets (REPM) has been approved with a financial outlay of ₹7,280 crore. The aim is to establish 6,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of integrated manufacturing in the country, Vaishnaw added.
