Corporation's meat waste handling plan riles residents

A recent plan for the establishment of a plant to treat meat and chicken waste generated by city stalls at the reclaimed portion of the Ariyamangalam dump yard has raised concerns that the corporation facility would never be allowed to shed its identity as a garbage accumulation centre.

- JOSE K JOSEPH @Tiruchy

Even as corporation officials expect bio-mining of legacy waste at the 47-acre site to conclude by next year, plans are in place for facilities including a waste-to-electricity plant, construction and debris recycling unit and waste-to-cooking gas or compressed natural gas plant on the reclaimed land.

Against this backdrop comes the proposal for a plant to treat meat and chicken waste in the same dump yard.
