Another low-pressure area likely soon; may move to coast by Dec 17

- SV KRISHNA CHAITANYA @Chennai

City on alert, low-lying areas under watch

THE northeast monsoon has come in heavy this year, already delivering bountiful rains. In all likelihood, Tamil Nadu might see a third weather system, if models hold good.

After Cyclone Fengal and the current well-marked low-pressure area, both giving significant rains, another low-pressure area is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal and move towards the Tamil Nadu coast around December 17. The weather system may bring another spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall across many districts.

From October 1 to December 12, the state has received 465 mm of rainfall as against the average of 445 mm, with 18 days left before the monsoon draws to a close, statistically.
