EC suspends 7 Bengal officials working on SIR for ‘serious misconduct’

THE Election Commission has ordered the immediate suspension of seven officials of the West Bengal government at the level of Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AEROs) for “serious misconduct, dereliction of duty and misuse of statutory powers” in connection with the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls in the state.
The commission has also directed West Bengal chief secretary Nandini Chakravorty to ensure that disciplinary proceedings are initiated against them. Booth-level and electoral registration officers and their assistants are state government employees, who work on deputation for the EC to undertake intensive updation of the voters’ list and assist in the conduct of polls.
