THE accused in drug cases are becoming violent during checks conducted by the police and the excise department as part of preventing drug sales and trafficking and are resorting to any means to escape from the officers. Shanid Saleem, 28, a native of Ambayathode, who swallowed an MDMA pack after seeing the police in Thamarassery, died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Shanid had been living in his paternal grandmother's house in Ambayathode. On Friday, the police officers noticed Shanid in suspicious circumstances while they were on patrol in Ambayathode.
