Concern as Fewer Migratory Birds 'Check-In' at Kadalundi Sanctuary

Sanctuary Once Drew Over 100 Species of Birds From Central Asia, Europe During the Winter

THE Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, once celebrated as a thriving haven for migratory birds, is now witnessing a troubling decline in bird arrivals, according to recent statistics and observations from local birdwatchers.

Known for its vibrant flocks and rare species, the sanctuary's now-muted sounds and dwindling sightings have raised concerns among conservationists and nature enthusiasts alike.

The most alarming indicator of the decline is the near disappearance of the 'Sandwich Tern', a distinctive migratory species that was commonly spotted in the Kadalundi Vallikkunnu Community Reserve, particularly at the Kadalundi estuary, locally known as Kadalundi Aala. This species, which once arrived in significant numbers, has now almost vanished from the region.

In 1986, bird surveys recorded flocks of more than 500 Sandwich Terns at the sanctuary—then a vital stopover for migratory birds. The absence of these large flocks today reflects a deeper ecological concern that experts say must be addressed urgently.
