The arrest was made by Ghazipur police, which conducted a raid at the residence of former Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) MLA Abbas Ansari after tracking Umar's location there.

The police action against Umar Ansari came over charges of forgery and filing a fraudulent petition in court seeking release of a property registered in the name of his mother, Afshan Ansari, who is wanted in a number of cases and has been evading arrest. Afshan Ansari carries a reward of ₹1 lakh on her arrest from Ghazipur and Mau police.
