Jose demands repeal of Forest Amendment Bill

December 15, 2024

KERALA Congress (M) chairman Jose K Mani has raised concerns regarding the draft of the Kerala Forest (Amendment) Bill, 2024, and its potential impact on farmers living on the forest fringes across Kerala.

- EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @Kottayam

He alleged that the Act is a covert plan of a section of high-ranking IFS officials to expand forest habitat by displacing 1.30 crore farmers from their farming land in 430 panchayats along forest fringes. Jose also sought the intervention of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and prevent the forest department from pushing the Bill through in the upcoming assembly session.

He also claimed that some IFS officers were using fear tactics, such as wildlife attacks, to force farmers off their land. Additionally, he highlighted the suspicion about some organisations purchasing farmland near forest boundaries and then transferring ownership to the forest department for financial gain.
