THE Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said flight AI 171 en route to London Gatwick crashed five minutes after take-off, also confirming that there were 232 passengers on board, including two infants, and 10 crew members. In a statement, the aviation regulator said, the aircraft took off at 1.38 pm and crashed five minutes after take-off into Megani Nagar, a residential area. The Pilot in Command Sumit Sabharwal and co-pilot Clive Kunder were in the cockpit.

Smoke was evident from afar and the airport emergency team was activated, the statement added. The Director General of Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has left for Ahmedabad, the DGCA added.
