Trump tariff: India's basmati loss is Pak's gain
The New Indian Express Kollam
|August 08, 2025
THE 50% tariff US President Donald Trump slapped on Indian basmati rice exports could adversely affect Indian basmati rice exports, and Pakistan would be the gainer, increasing its market share in the US.
Currently, $1,200 is the average price per metric tonne. The new tariff would hike it to $1,800. On the other hand, the price in Pakistan, which enjoys a low tariff rate of 19 percent, would come to only $1,450, a difference of $350 per MT. The US Basmati market accounts for approximately 5 lakh metric tonnes (LMT). Of this, about 3 LMT worth $350 million comes from India and the rest from Pakistan.
