AFTER several decades, Gujarat saw its first tiger that stayed in the wilderness, when a big cat not only returned but claimed Ratanmahal Wildlife Sanctuary in Dahod as its permanent home.

What began as an occasional sighting in February 2025 has now evolved into a nine-month-long residency, the longest continuous tiger presence ever recorded in Gujarat a shift that has electrified the state’s wildlife map and challenged its conservation apparatus.

While the Forest Department calls it a breakthrough for the state’s ecosystem, Environment Minister Arjun Modhwadia hails it as a “historic moment” that places Gujarat among the rare Indian states hosting lions, leopards and tigers together.
